Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the client in Novell GroupWise through 8.0.3 HP3, and 2012 through SP2, on Windows allows user-assisted remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via the body of an e-mail message.
The bug was discovered 04/16/2013. The weakness was presented 04/02/2013 by Bartlomiej Balcerek with Wroclaw Centre for Networking and Supercomputing as 7012063 as not defined knowledge base article (Website). The advisory is available at novell.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-1087 since 01/11/2013. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059.007 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

Upgrading to version 2012 12.0 SP2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The knowledge base article contains the following remark:
To block the ability to run scripts within the GroupWise client for Windows, administrators will need to update their GroupWise clients to version 8.0.3 Hot Patch 3 (or later) or 2012 Support Pack 2 (or later) AND do the following steps: 1. Create a new DWORD (32-bit) registry value under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Novell\GroupWise\Client\Setup\ 2. Enter "HTMLScriptsBlocked" (minus the quotes) in the "Value name" field 3. Enter "1" (minus the quotes) in the "Value data" field" 4. Click OK to save the new DWORD value Administrators can push out that registry setting to their Windows workstation using Novell ZENworks Configuration Management or another workstation-management utility.
