A vulnerability has been found in GNU C Library up to 2.17 (Software Library) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function setjmp/longjmp. The manipulation of the argument PTR_MANGLE/PTR_DEMANGLE with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The PTR_MANGLE implementation in the GNU C Library (aka glibc or libc6) 2.4, 2.17, and earlier, and Embedded GLIBC (EGLIBC) does not initialize the random value for the pointer guard, which makes it easier for context-dependent attackers to control execution flow by leveraging a buffer-overflow vulnerability in an application and using the known zero value pointer guard to calculate a pointer address.
The bug was discovered 03/01/2013. The weakness was disclosed 07/16/2013 by Hector Marco as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is available at hmarco.org. The vendor was not involved in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-4788 since 07/10/2013. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed by Hector Marco and been published before and not just after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at hmarco.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 136 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70158 (Fedora 20 : glibc-2.18-9.fc20 (2013-17423)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167156 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for glibc (SUSE-SU-2014:1122-1)).
Applying the patch ptr_mangle-eglibc-2.17.patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at hmarco.org. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
