The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple unspecified vulnerabilities in the InfiniBand subsystem in IBM AIX 6.1 and 7.1, and VIOS 2.2.2.2-FP-26 SP-02, allow local users to gain privileges via vectors involving (1) arp.ib or (2) ibstat.
The issue has been introduced in 11/09/2007. The weakness was disclosed 07/16/2013 as confirmed advisory (IBM Knowledge Base). The advisory is shared at aix.software.ibm.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-4011 since 06/07/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2076 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69287 (AIX 7.1 TL 2 : devices.common.IBM.ib.rte (U857552)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family AIX Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121337 (IBM AIX InfiniBand Local Privilege Escalation Vulnerability).
Applying the patch 7.1.2.2 is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (85617), Exploit-DB (28507), Tenable (69287), SecurityFocus (BID 61287†) and OSVDB (95419†). The entry VDB-9578 is pretty similar. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
