A vulnerability was found in GNU Chess up to 6.2.3. It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function ValidateMove of the file frontend/move.cc. Stack-based buffer overflow in the ValidateMove function in frontend/move.cc in GNU Chess (aka gnuchess) before 6.2.4 might allow context-dependent attackers to execute arbitrary code via a large input, as demonstrated when in UCI mode.
The bug was discovered 11/13/2016. The weakness was published 01/23/2017 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at lists.gnu.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2015-8972 since 11/14/2016. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. Upgrading to version 6.2.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
