Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Zabbix up to 2.0.17/2.2.12/3.0.2 (Network Management Software). Affected is some unknown functionality of the file userparameter_mysql.conf of the component Configuration Script. The manipulation of the argument mysql.size with an unknown input leads to a sql injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-89. The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The mysql user parameter configuration script (userparameter_mysql.conf) in the agent in Zabbix before 2.0.18, 2.2.x before 2.2.13, and 3.0.x before 3.0.3, when used with a shell other than bash, allows context-dependent attackers to execute arbitrary code or SQL commands via the mysql.size parameter.
The bug was discovered 05/03/2016. The weakness was disclosed 01/23/2017 by Timo Lindfors as EDB-ID 39769 as confirmed exploit (Exploit-DB). The advisory is shared for download at exploit-db.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2016-4338 since 04/27/2016. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. A authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1505.
A public exploit has been developed by Timo Lindfors and been published even before and not after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 224 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 95816 (GLSA-201612-42 : Zabbix: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading to version 2.0.18 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (39769), Tenable (95816) and SecurityFocus (BID 89631†). VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
