Summaryinfo

A vulnerability marked as critical has been reported in Cisco WebEx. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component Browser Extension. This manipulation causes memory corruption. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-3823. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. Furthermore, there is an exploit available. It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Cisco WebEx (Unified Communication Software). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the component Browser Extension. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

The bug was discovered 01/24/2017. The weakness was shared 01/24/2017 by Tavis Ormandy with Cisco Systems as cisco-sa-20170124-webex as confirmed security advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at tools.cisco.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2017-3823 since 12/21/2016. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The advisory points out:

A vulnerability in the Cisco WebEx browser extensions provided by Cisco WebEx Meetings Server and Cisco WebEx Meetings Center could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on a targeted system.

A public exploit has been developed by Tavis Ormandy and been published immediately after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at bugs.chromium.org. It is declared as highly functional. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 96907 (Cisco WebEx for Firefox RCE (cisco-sa-20170124-webex)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370299 (Cisco WebEx Extension For Microsoft Internet Explorer Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (cisco-sa-20170124-webex)). The advisory illustrates:

The extension works on any URL that contains the magic pattern "cwcsf-nativemsg-iframe-43c85c0d-d633-af5e-c056-32dc7efc570b.html", which can be extracted from the extensions manifest. Note that the pattern can occur in an iframe, so there is not necessarily any user-visible indication of what is happening, visiting any website would be enough. The extension uses nativeMessaging, so this magic string is enough for any website to execute arbitrary code (!!).

Upgrading to version 1.0.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 41409.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (41148), Tenable (96907) and SecurityFocus (BID 95737†). Additional details are provided at bugs.chromium.org. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
