vim before patch 8.0.0056 does not properly validate values for the filetype , syntax and keymap options, which may result in the execution of arbitrary code if a file with a specially crafted modeline is opened.
The bug was discovered 11/22/2016. The weakness was presented 01/23/2017 as HT207483 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-1248 since 12/27/2015. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The advisory points out:
An input validation issue existed in modelines. This was addressed through improved input validation.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 95551 (openSUSE Security Update : vim (openSUSE-2016-1391)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370282 (Apple macOS Sierra Security Update 10.12.3 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2017-01-23-2)).
Upgrading to version 10.12.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
