Details
A vulnerability was found in Wireshark up to 2.2.3 (Packet Analyzer Software). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the file epan/dissectors/packet-dhcpv6.c of the component DHCPv6 Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
In Wireshark 2.2.0 to 2.2.3 and 2.0.0 to 2.0.9, the DHCPv6 dissector could go into a large loop, triggered by packet injection or a malformed capture file. This was addressed in epan/dissectors/packet-dhcpv6.c by changing a data type to avoid an integer overflow.
The weakness was presented 01/25/2017 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2017-5597 since 01/25/2017. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
