Summary
A vulnerability marked as problematic has been reported in OpenSSL up to 1.1.0c. The impacted element is an unknown function of the component DHE/ECDHE Key Exchange. This manipulation causes null pointer dereference. This vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2017-3730. The attack is possible to be carried out remotely. Moreover, an exploit is present. It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability was found in OpenSSL up to 1.1.0c (Network Encryption Software). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the component DHE/ECDHE Key Exchange. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability.
The bug was discovered 01/26/2017. The weakness was disclosed 01/26/2017 by Guido Vranken as 20170126.txt as confirmed security advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at openssl.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the project team. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2017-3730 since 12/16/2016. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The advisory points out:
If a malicious server supplies bad parameters for a DHE or ECDHE key exchange then this can result in the client attempting to dereference a NULL pointer leading to a client crash. This could be exploited in a Denial of Service attack.
It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 12 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 96821 (FreeBSD : OpenSSL -- multiple vulnerabilities (d455708a-e3d3-11e6-9940-b499baebfeaf)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 43662 (Fortigate FortiOS Denial of Service Vulnerability (FG-IR-17-019)).
Upgrading to version 1.0.2k or 1.1.0d eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (41192), Tenable (96821), SecurityFocus (BID 95812†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1037717†). Additional details are provided at mta.openssl.org. The entries VDB-68431, VDB-89667, VDB-92931 and VDB-95678 are pretty similar.
