EMC RSA BSAFE Crypto-J up to 6.2.1 OCSP Response nextUpdate 7pk security

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in EMC RSA BSAFE Crypto-J up to 6.2.1. This affects an unknown code block of the component OCSP Response Handler. The manipulation of the argument nextUpdate as part of a Empty leads to a 7pk security vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-254. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, and integrity.

The bug was discovered 01/26/2017. The weakness was disclosed 01/26/2017 with EMC Product Security Response Center as ESA-2016-154: RSA BSAFE® Crypto-J Multiple Security Vulnerabilities as confirmed mailinglist post (Bugtraq). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2016-8212 since 09/13/2016. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1211 according to MITRE ATT&CK. The advisory points out:

CSP responses have two time values; thisUpdate and nextUpdate. These specify a validity period, however both values are optional. Crypto-J treats the lack of a nextUpdate as indicating that the OCSP response is valid indefinitely instead of restricting its validity for a brief period surrounding the thisUpdate time.

Upgrading to version 6.2.2 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at SecurityFocus (BID 95831†). The entry VDB-96088 is pretty similar. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
