A vulnerability was found in libarchive 3.2.2 (File Compression Software). It has been classified as critical. This affects the function lha_read_file_header_1 of the file archive_read_support_format_lha.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. An error in the lha_read_file_header_1() function (archive_read_support_format_lha.c) in libarchive 3.2.2 allows remote attackers to trigger an out-of-bounds read memory access and subsequently cause a crash via a specially crafted archive.
The bug was discovered 01/27/2017. The weakness was presented 01/27/2017 by Jakub Jirasek with Secunia as SA74169 as confirmed mailinglist post (Bugtraq). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the project team. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2017-5601 since 01/27/2017. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely.
