Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in RoundCube up to 1.0.x (Mail Client Software). This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the component DBMail Driver. The manipulation of the argument password with an unknown input leads to a injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-74. The product constructs all or part of a command, data structure, or record using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify how it is parsed or interpreted when it is sent to a downstream component. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The DBMail driver in the Password plugin in Roundcube before 1.1.0 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands via shell metacharacters in the password.
The bug was discovered 02/05/2015. The weakness was disclosed 01/31/2017 (GitHub Repository). The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-2180 since 03/02/2015. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. The successful exploitation requires a single authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1055.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 151 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 84754 (openSUSE Security Update : roundcubemail (openSUSE-2015-490)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167967 (OpenSuSE Security Update for roundcubemail (openSUSE-SU-2015:1240-1)).
Upgrading to version 1.1.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (84754) and SecurityFocus (BID 96387†). The entry VDB-96293 is pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
