A vulnerability was found in MyBB and MyBB Merge System up to 1.6.17/1.8.5 (Content Management System) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown part of the file xmlhttp.php of the component Forum Password Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. xmlhttp.php in MyBB (aka MyBulletinBoard) before 1.6.18 and 1.8.x before 1.8.6 and MyBB Merge System before 1.8.6 allows remote attackers to bypass intended access restrictions via vectors related to the forum password.
The bug was discovered 11/10/2016. The weakness was presented 01/31/2017 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-8973 since 11/17/2016. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation.
