Oracle MySQL Server up to 5.1.69/5.5.31/5.6.11 GIS memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Oracle MySQL Server up to 5.1.69/5.5.31/5.6.11 (Database Software). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the component GIS. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

MariaDB 5.5.x before 5.5.30, 5.3.x before 5.3.13, 5.2.x before 5.2.15, and 5.1.x before 5.1.68, and Oracle MySQL 5.1.69 and earlier, 5.5.31 and earlier, and 5.6.11 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a crafted geometry feature that specifies a large number of points, which is not properly handled when processing the binary representation of this feature, related to a numeric calculation error.

The weakness was published 07/16/2013 by Alyssa Milburn as Oracle Critical Patch Update Advisory - July 2013 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at oracle.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-1861 since 02/19/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. A single authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69073 (Ubuntu 10.04 LTS / 12.04 LTS / 12.10 / 13.04 : mysql-5.5, mysql-dfsg-5.1 vulnerabilities (USN-1909-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121464 (Debian MySQL Server Insecure File Creation Vulnerability (DSA-2818-1)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12952.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (82895), Exploit-DB (38392), Tenable (69073), SecurityFocus (BID 58511†) and OSVDB (91415†).
