Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.9.5 (Operating System). This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the file drivers/net/ieee802154/atusb.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-399. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
drivers/net/ieee802154/atusb.c in the Linux kernel 4.9.x before 4.9.6 interacts incorrectly with the CONFIG_VMAP_STACK option, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (system crash or memory corruption) or possibly have unspecified other impact by leveraging use of more than one virtual page for a DMA scatterlist.
The bug was discovered 02/06/2017. The weakness was disclosed 02/06/2017 (Website). The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2017-5548 since 01/20/2017. Local access is required to approach this attack. A single authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 96894 (Fedora 25 : kernel (2017-81fbd592d4)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 351446 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for kernel: ALAC2012-2018-012).
Upgrading to version 4.9.x eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (96894) and SecurityFocus (BID 95710†). The entries VDB-96553, VDB-96555, VDB-96560 and VDB-96561 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
