Linux Kernel up to 4.7.6 SELinux W^X Policy fs/aio.c aio_mount access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.7.6 (Operating System). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function aio_mount of the file fs/aio.c of the component SELinux W^X Policy. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-264. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The aio_mount function in fs/aio.c in the Linux kernel before 4.7.7 does not properly restrict execute access, which makes it easier for local users to bypass intended SELinux W^X policy restrictions, and consequently gain privileges, via an io_setup system call.

The bug was discovered 02/06/2017. The weakness was released 02/07/2017 (Website). The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-10044 since 12/26/2016. Local access is required to approach this attack. The successful exploitation requires a single authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 100150 (SUSE SLES12 Security Update : kernel (SUSE-SU-2017:1247-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169993 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for the Linux Kernel (SUSE-SU-2017:1360-1)).

Upgrading to version 4.7.7 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (100150), SecurityFocus (BID 96122†) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2024-3251). Entry connected to this vulnerability is available at VDB-96585. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
