Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Exponent CMS up to 2.3.x (Content Management System). This issue affects an unknown part. The manipulation of the argument id/title/content_id with an unknown input leads to a sql injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-89. The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple SQL injection vulnerabilities in Exponent CMS before 2.4.0 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary SQL commands via the (1) id parameter in an activate_address address controller action, (2) title parameter in a show blog controller action, or (3) content_id parameter in a showComments expComment controller action.
The bug was discovered 09/20/2016. The weakness was disclosed 02/07/2017 by Manuel García Cárdenas as EDB-ID 40412 as confirmed exploit (Exploit-DB). The advisory is shared at exploit-db.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-7400 since 09/09/2016. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1505 for this issue.
A public exploit has been developed by Manuel García Cárdenas and been published before and not just after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 140 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 11692 (Exponent CMS Blind SQL Injection Vulnerability).
Upgrading to version 2.4.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (40412) and SecurityFocus (BID 93041†). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
