Details
A vulnerability was found in IBM Domino up to 9.0.1 FP3 IF2/9.0.1 FP5 IF1 (Groupware Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown function of the component TLS Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. Impacted is confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:
IBM Domino 9.0.1 Fix Pack 3 Interim Fix 2 through 9.0.1 Fix Pack 5 Interim Fix 1, when using TLS and AES GCM, uses random nonce generation, which makes it easier for remote attackers to obtain the authentication key and spoof data by leveraging the reuse of a nonce in a session and a "forbidden attack." NOTE: this CVE has been incorrectly used for GCM nonce reuse issues in other products; see CVE-2016-10213 for the A10 issue, CVE-2016-10212 for the Radware issue, and CVE-2017-5933 for the Citrix issue.
The bug was discovered 03/31/2016. The weakness was released 02/08/2017 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at www-01.ibm.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-0270 since 12/08/2015. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 314 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 53003 (IBM Domino Web Server TLS AES GCM Nonce Generation Vulnerability (swg21979604)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at SecurityFocus (BID 96062†). VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
