VIM up to 8.0 Tree Length Spell File integer overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in VIM up to 8.0 (Word Processing Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the component Tree Length Handler. The manipulation as part of a Spell File leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

vim before patch 8.0.0322 does not properly validate values for tree length when handling a spell file, which may result in an integer overflow at a memory allocation site and a resultant buffer overflow.

The bug was discovered 02/10/2017. The weakness was published 02/10/2017 as confirmed mailinglist post (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2017-5953 since 02/10/2017. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 97135 (Debian DSA-3786-1 : vim - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 197491 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Vim Vulnerabilities (USN-4016-1)).

Upgrading to version 8.0.0322 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (97135) and SecurityFocus (BID 96217†). Similar entry is available at VDB-136028. VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
