Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Redhat Tomcat 1.0.2 on Red Hat. This affects some unknown processing of the component Init-scripts. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a link following vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-59. The product attempts to access a file based on the filename, but it does not properly prevent that filename from identifying a link or shortcut that resolves to an unintended resource. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The (1) tomcat5, (2) tomcat6, and (3) tomcat7 init scripts, as used in the RPM distribution of Tomcat for JBoss Enterprise Web Server 1.0.2 and 2.0.0, and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 and 6, allow local users to change the ownership of arbitrary files via a symlink attack on (a) tomcat5-initd.log, (b) tomcat6-initd.log, (c) catalina.out, or (d) tomcat7-initd.log.Affected are tomcat RPM packages for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 & 6, as well as Jboss Enterprise Web Server
The weakness was disclosed 03/26/2013 by Simon Fayer with Imperial College London as RHSA-2013-0869 as confirmed advisory (Red Hat Security Advisory). It is possible to read the advisory at rhn.redhat.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Redhat. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-1976 since 02/19/2013. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69754 (Amazon Linux AMI : tomcat6 (ALAS-2013-196)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166386 (OpenSuSE Security Update for Tomcat (openSUSE-SU-2013:1306-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (69754), SecurityFocus (BID 60186†), OSVDB (95550†), Secunia (SA54327†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-39751†). The entries VDB-8666, VDB-9520, VDB-11847 and VDB-11928 are pretty similar. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
