Performing a manipulation results in command injection. This vulnerability is reported as CVE-2016-9337. The attack is possible to be carried out remotely. No exploit exists. This vulnerability has a historic impact because of its background and how it was received. The affected component should be upgraded.
Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, was found in Tesla Model S up to 7.0 (Vehicle Software). This affects an unknown part of the component Gateway ECU. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a command injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-77. The product constructs all or part of a command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended command when it is sent to a downstream component. This is going to have an impact on integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
An issue was discovered in Tesla Motors Model S automobile, all firmware versions before version 7.1 (2.36.31) with web browser functionality enabled. The vehicle's Gateway ECU is susceptible to commands that may allow an attacker to install malicious software allowing the attacker to send messages to the vehicle's CAN bus, a Command Injection.
The bug was discovered 12/06/2016. The weakness was disclosed 12/06/2016 with Tencent as ICSA-16-341-01 as confirmed advisory (US CERT). The advisory is shared at ics-cert.us-cert.gov. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Tesla. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2016-9337 since 11/16/2016. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/02/2020). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1202 for this issue. Due to its background and reception, this vulnerability has a historic impact. The advisory points out:
The vulnerability allows the vehicle’s software and driving functions to be controlled remotely through the web browser, which must be launched or already running from a previous launch. This allows attackers to gain access to the vehicle’s CAN bus through a firmware validation flaw in the Gateway ECU of the vehicle.
We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k.
Upgrading to version 7.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
