Eaton EAMxxx up to 2013 Config File path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Eaton EAMxxx up to 2013. Affected is an unknown code of the component Config File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

An issue was discovered in certain legacy Eaton ePDUs -- the affected products are past end-of-life (EoL) and no longer supported: EAMxxx prior to June 30, 2015, EMAxxx prior to January 31, 2014, EAMAxx prior to January 31, 2014, EMAAxx prior to January 31, 2014, and ESWAxx prior to January 31, 2014. An unauthenticated attacker may be able to access configuration files with a specially crafted URL (Path Traversal).

The bug was discovered 01/26/2017. The weakness was disclosed 02/13/2017 by Maxim Rupp (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2016-9357 since 11/16/2016. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 18 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at SecurityFocus (BID 95817†). VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
