Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 3.x (Operating System) and classified as problematic. This issue affects an unknown part of the component TCP Stack. The manipulation as part of a TCP SYN Packet leads to a resource management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-399. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
The TCP stack in the Linux kernel 3.x does not properly implement a SYN cookie protection mechanism for the case of a fast network connection, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (CPU consumption) by sending many TCP SYN packets, as demonstrated by an attack against the kernel-3.10.0 package in CentOS Linux 7.
The bug was discovered 02/12/2017. The weakness was presented 02/14/2017 (Website). The advisory is shared at cxsecurity.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-5972 since 02/12/2017. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
