A vulnerability was found in DICOM DCMTK up to 3.6.0. It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function parsePresentationContext of the component Port 4242 Service. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Stack-based buffer overflow in the parsePresentationContext function in storescp in DICOM dcmtk-3.6.0 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (segmentation fault) via a long string sent to TCP port 4242.
The bug was discovered 12/16/2016. The weakness was disclosed 02/15/2017 (oss-sec). The advisory is available at openwall.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-8979 since 12/17/2016.
