A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in libav up to 11.8 (Multimedia Player Software). This issue affects the function get_vlc2 of the component MP3 File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. The get_vlc2 function in get_bits.h in Libav before 11.9 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and crash) via a crafted mp3 file, possibly related to startcode sequences during m4v detection.
The bug was discovered 10/15/2016. The weakness was published 02/15/2017 by Agostino Sarubbo with Gentoo (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-8675 since 10/15/2016. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation.
