libav up to 11.8 MP3 File get_vlc2 null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in libav up to 11.8 (Multimedia Player Software). This issue affects the function get_vlc2 of the component MP3 File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

The get_vlc2 function in get_bits.h in Libav before 11.9 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and crash) via a crafted mp3 file, possibly related to startcode sequences during m4v detection.

The bug was discovered 10/15/2016. The weakness was published 02/15/2017 by Agostino Sarubbo with Gentoo (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-8675 since 10/15/2016. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 123 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.

Upgrading to version 11.9 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at SecurityFocus (BID 93468†). Similar entry is available at VDB-96996. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
