Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in GraphicsMagick up to 7.0.3.2 (Image Processing Software). This affects the function AcquireMagickMemory of the file MagickCore/memory.c of the component Image Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The AcquireMagickMemory function in MagickCore/memory.c in GraphicsMagick before 7.0.3.3 allows remote attackers to have unspecified impact via a crafted image, which triggers a memory allocation failure.
The bug was discovered 10/10/2016. The weakness was released 02/15/2017 by Agostino Sarubbo with Gentoo (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2016-8862 since 10/20/2016. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 38 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 94946 (openSUSE Security Update : GraphicsMagick (openSUSE-2016-1311)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169614 (OpenSuSE Security Update for ImageMagick (openSUSE-SU-2016:3233-1)).
Upgrading to version 7.0.3.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (94946) and SecurityFocus (BID 93794†). Entry connected to this vulnerability is available at VDB-97012. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
