A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in FFmpeg up to 2.0 (Multimedia Processing Software). This issue affects the function cin_decode_rle of the file libavcodec/dsicinav.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. Impacted is confidentiality, and availability.
The weakness was presented 07/19/2013 by Mateusz Jurczyk and Gynvael Coldwind with Google Security Team as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared at git.videolan.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the project team. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.libav.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
