Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.9.9 (Operating System). This vulnerability affects the function mem_check_range of the file drivers/infiniband/sw/rxe/rxe_mr.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Integer overflow in the mem_check_range function in drivers/infiniband/sw/rxe/rxe_mr.c in the Linux kernel before 4.9.10 allows local users to cause a denial of service (memory corruption), obtain sensitive information from kernel memory, or possibly have unspecified other impact via a write or read request involving the "RDMA protocol over infiniband" (aka Soft RoCE) technology.
The bug was discovered 02/14/2017. The weakness was published 02/22/2017 (oss-sec). The advisory is available at openwall.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-8636 since 10/12/2016. Local access is required to approach this attack. The successful exploitation needs a single authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 8 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 101929 (Ubuntu 16.04 LTS : linux-hwe vulnerabilities (USN-3361-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196855 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux-hwe Vulnerabilities (USN-3361-1)).
Upgrading to version 4.9.10 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 6 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (101929) and SecurityFocus (BID 96189†). Similar entries are available at VDB-96560, VDB-96564 and VDB-121319. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
