A vulnerability was found in ytnef up to 1.9.0 (Document Reader Software). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function SanitizeFilename of the file settings.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. An issue was discovered in ytnef before 1.9.1. This is related to a patch described as "9 of 9. Directory Traversal using the filename; SanitizeFilename function in settings.c."
The bug was discovered 02/23/2017. The weakness was shared 02/24/2017 by Eric Sesterhenn with X41 D-Sec GmbH (Website). The advisory is shared for download at openwall.com.
