Details
A vulnerability has been found in QNAP QTS 4.2.x (Network Attached Storage Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the component Firmware Update Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was shared 02/15/2017 by Harry Sintonen as QNAP QTS 4.2.x multiple vulnerabilities as not defined mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue. The advisory points out:
The vulnerabilities in QNAP QTS firmware update enable semi-automated remote command execution attacks against the QNAP firmware update functionality. The attack involves performing Man-in-The-Middle attack on the firmware update request. The exploit is triggered when the administrator logs on to the device, or when manual firmware update check is performed. The Cross-Site Scripting vulnerability enables attack automation, no other user interaction is needed.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
