Details
A vulnerability was found in libiberty (the affected version unknown). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects the function gnu_special of the component Binary Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
Integer overflow in the gnu_special function in libiberty allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (segmentation fault and crash) via a crafted binary, related to the "demangling of virtual tables."
The bug was discovered 05/05/2016. The weakness was shared 02/24/2017 (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at openwall.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-4489 since 05/05/2016. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 74 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 92380 (Debian DLA-552-1 : binutils security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196831 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Valgrind Vulnerabilities (USN-3337-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (92380) and SecurityFocus (BID 90017†). The entries VDB-96611, VDB-97283, VDB-97287 and VDB-97288 are related to this item. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
