The L2TP Client in MikroTik RouterOS versions 6.83.3 and 6.37.4 does not enable IPsec encryption after a reboot, which allows man-in-the-middle attackers to view transmitted data unencrypted and gain access to networks on the L2TP server by monitoring the packets for the transmitted data and obtaining the L2TP secret.
The bug was discovered 03/13/2018. The weakness was shared 02/27/2017 by ryan (Website). The advisory is shared at blog.milne.it. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2017-6297 since 02/23/2017. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1211 for this issue.
