An issue was discovered in Veritas NetBackup before 8.0 and NetBackup Appliance before 3.0. Local arbitrary command execution can occur when using bpcd and bpnbat.

The weakness was shared 03/01/2017 by Sven Blumenstein, Xiaoran Wang and Andrew Griffiths with Google as Veritas NetBackup v6.x, v7.x, v8.0 and NetBackup appliances v2.x, v3.0 - Multiple Critical Vulnerabilities as not defined mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. The vendor was not involved in the public release. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2017-6401 since 03/01/2017. Attacking locally is a requirement. A authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. Multiple critical vulnerabilities were identified in Veritas NetBackup and NetBackup appliance. The vulnerabilities were discovered during a black box security assessment and therefore the vulnerability list should not be considered exhaustive.
A public exploit has been developed by Sven Blumenstein/Xiaoran Wang/Andrew Griffiths and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at seclists.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 92 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 104888 (Veritas NetBackup Appliance < 2.7.2 / 3.1.0 Multiple Vulnerabilities (VTS17-003)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370336 (Veritas NetBackup Multiple Vulnerabilities.(VTS17-003)). The code used by the exploit is:

Upgrading to version 8.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 8 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The mailinglist post contains the following remark:
