The hesiod_init function in lib/hesiod.c in Hesiod 3.2.1 compares EUID with UID to determine whether to use configurations from environment variables, which allows local users to gain privileges via the (1) HESIOD_CONFIG or (2) HES_DOMAIN environment variable and leveraging certain SUID/SGUID binary.

The bug was discovered 01/20/2017. The weakness was shared 03/01/2017 by Florian Weimer (oss-sec). The advisory is available at openwall.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-10151 since 01/20/2017. Local access is required to approach this attack. A simple authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 40 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
