Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Cisco NetFlow Generation Appliance up to 1.1. This affects an unknown function of the component SCTP Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability (Hang). CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-399. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

A vulnerability in the Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP) decoder of the Cisco NetFlow Generation Appliance (NGA) with software before 1.1(1a) could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to cause the device to hang or unexpectedly reload, causing a denial of service (DoS) condition. The vulnerability is due to incomplete validation of SCTP packets being monitored on the NGA data ports. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending malformed SCTP packets on a network that is monitored by an NGA data port. SCTP packets addressed to the IP address of the NGA itself will not trigger this vulnerability. An exploit could allow the attacker to cause the appliance to become unresponsive or reload, causing a DoS condition. User interaction could be needed to recover the device using the reboot command from the CLI. The following Cisco NetFlow Generation Appliances are vulnerable: NGA 3140, NGA 3240, NGA 3340. Cisco Bug IDs: CSCvc83320.

The bug was discovered 03/01/2017. The weakness was shared 03/01/2017 with Cisco as cisco-sa-20170301-nga / CSCvc83320 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at tools.cisco.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2017-3826 since 12/21/2016. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The advisory points out:

The vulnerability is due to incomplete validation of SCTP packets being monitored on the NGA data ports. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending malformed SCTP packets on a network that is monitored by an NGA data port. SCTP packets addressed to the IP address of the NGA itself will not trigger this vulnerability.

Upgrading to version 1.1(1a) eliminates this vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:

User interaction could be needed to recover the device using the reboot command from the CLI.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at SecurityFocus (BID 96509†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1037938†). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
