Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Foundation Xen (Virtualization Software). It has been classified as problematic. Affected is the function vmx_set_uc_mode. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

The vmx_set_uc_mode function in Xen 3.3 through 4.3, when disabling chaches, allows local HVM guests with access to memory mapped I/O regions to cause a denial of service (CPU consumption and possibly hypervisor or guest kernel panic) via a crafted GFN range.

The weakness was shared 07/24/2013 by Zhenzhong Duan as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-2212 since 02/19/2013. The attack needs to approached within the local network. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a private exploit are known.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73015 (SuSE 11.3 Security Update : Xen (SAT Patch Number 8973)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166934 (OpenSuSE Security Update for xen (openSUSE-SU-2014:0482-1)).

The best possible mitigation is suggested to be Workaround.
