Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in ImageMagick up to 6.9.5 (Image Processing Software). Affected is some unknown functionality of the file coders/tiff.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Buffer overflow in coders/tiff.c in ImageMagick before 6.9.5-1 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or have other unspecified impact via a crafted file, related to extend validity.
The bug was discovered 12/26/2016. The weakness was published 03/02/2017 by Bastien Roucaries (oss-sec). The advisory is available at openwall.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2016-10063 since 12/26/2016. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 57 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 97317 (SUSE SLED12 / SLES12 Security Update : ImageMagick (SUSE-SU-2017:0529-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169786 (OpenSUSE Security Update for ImageMagick (openSUSE-SU-2017:0587-1)).
Upgrading to version 6.9.5-1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
