Linux Kernel up to 4.8.13 L2TPv3 IP Encapsulation net/l2tp/l2tp_ip.c use after free

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-10200. Attacking locally is a requirement. No exploit is available. It is advisable to implement a patch to correct this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.8.13 (Operating System). It has been classified as problematic. Affected is an unknown code block of the file net/l2tp/l2tp_ip.c of the component L2TPv3 IP Encapsulation. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Race condition in the L2TPv3 IP Encapsulation feature in the Linux kernel before 4.8.14 allows local users to gain privileges or cause a denial of service (use-after-free) by making multiple bind system calls without properly ascertaining whether a socket has the SOCK_ZAPPED status, related to net/l2tp/l2tp_ip.c and net/l2tp/l2tp_ip6.c.

The bug was discovered 03/01/2017. The weakness was published 03/07/2017 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2016-10200 since 02/04/2017. The attack needs to be approached locally. The requirement for exploitation is a authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 6 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 99156 (openSUSE Security Update : the Linux Kernel (openSUSE-2017-418)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169979 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for the Linux Kernel (SUSE-SU-2017:1301-1)).

Upgrading to version 4.8.14 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published 4 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (99156), SecurityFocus (BID 101783†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1037965†). Similar entry is available at VDB-93841. VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
