This vulnerability affects the function applyTransformation in the library plugins/transformations/abstract/TextLinkTransformationsPlugin.class.php of the component TextLinkTransformationPlugin. Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in libraries/plugins/transformations/abstract/TextLinkTransformationsPlugin.class.php in phpMyAdmin 4.0.x before 4.0.4.2 allows remote authenticated users to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via a crafted object name associated with a TextLinkTransformationPlugin link.
The weakness was disclosed 07/28/2013 by Dieter Adriaenssens as PMASA-2013-13 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at phpmyadmin.net. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-5001 since 07/29/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. A single authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059.007 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

Upgrading to version 4.0.4.2 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at phpmyadmin.net. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
