A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in phpMyAdmin (Database Administration Software). Affected is an unknown code of the file version_check.php of the component Version Information Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Multiple cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities in phpMyAdmin 3.5.x before 3.5.8.2 and 4.0.x before 4.0.4.2 allow remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via vectors involving (1) a crafted database name, (2) a crafted user name, (3) a crafted logo URL in the navigation panel, (4) a crafted entry in a certain proxy list, or (5) crafted content in a version.json file.
The weakness was shared 07/28/2013 by Emanuel Bronshtein with BugSec as PMASA-2013-11 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at phpmyadmin.net. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-4996 since 07/29/2013. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.
By approaching the search of inurl:version_check.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70753 (GLSA-201311-02 : phpMyAdmin: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12724 (PhpMyAdmin Multiple Vulnerabilities (PMASA-2013-14,PMASA-2013-12,PMASA-2013-11,PMASA-2013-8)).
Upgrading to version 3.5.8.2 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at phpmyadmin.net. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
