A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Microsoft Windows 7 SP1/Server 2008 SP2/Vista SP2 (Operating System). Affected by this vulnerability is the function nt!nt!HvpGetBinMemAlloc/nt!ExpFindAndRemoveTagBigPages of the component Registry. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The bug was discovered 03/14/2017. The weakness was released 03/14/2017 by James Forshaw with Google Security Research as MS17-017 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2017-0103 since 09/09/2016. An attack has to be approached locally. A single authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed by Google Security Research and been published 6 days after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at github.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k.
