A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in GNU binutils 2.28 (Programming Tool Software). Affected by this issue is the function readelf. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. readelf in GNU Binutils 2.28 writes to illegal addresses while processing corrupt input files containing symbol-difference relocations, leading to a heap-based buffer overflow.
The bug was discovered 03/17/2017. The weakness was presented 03/17/2017 as Bug 21137 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at sourceware.org.
