The fnmatch function in the GNU C Library (aka glibc or libc6) before 2.22 might allow context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a malformed pattern, which triggers an out-of-bounds read.
The bug was discovered 02/28/2015. The weakness was presented 03/20/2017 by Kostya Serebryany (Website). The advisory is shared at sourceware.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-8984 since 02/14/2017. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
