A vulnerability was found in Firebird up to 2.5.6/3.0.1 (Database Administration Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the file fbudf.so of the component udf Subsystem. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. Insufficient checks in the UDF subsystem in Firebird 2.5.x before 2.5.7 and 3.0.x before 3.0.2 allow remote authenticated users to execute code by using a 'system' entrypoint from fbudf.so.
The bug was discovered 02/01/2017. The weakness was disclosed 03/24/2017 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at tracker.firebirdsql.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2017-6369 since 02/28/2017. The attack may be launched remotely. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 26 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 97449 (Fedora 25 : firebird (2017-0fbbb732a3)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 197412 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Firebird2.5 Vulnerabilities (USN-3929-1)).
Upgrading to version 2.5.7 or 3.0.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
