Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in uClibc-ng up to 1.0.11. This vulnerability affects the function _read_etc_hosts_r of the file libc/inet/resolv.c of the component DNS Reply Handler. The manipulation as part of a Crafted Packet leads to a resource consumption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-400. The product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource, thereby enabling an actor to influence the amount of resources consumed, eventually leading to the exhaustion of available resources. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
The __read_etc_hosts_r function in libc/inet/resolv.c in uClibc-ng before 1.0.12 allows remote DNS servers to cause a denial of service (infinite loop) via a crafted packet.
The bug was discovered 05/02/2016. The weakness was released 03/24/2017 by Daniel Fahlgren (oss-sec). The advisory is available at openwall.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-2225 since 02/05/2016. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation.
