Details
A vulnerability was found in ImageMagick up to 6.9.7-3/7.0.4-3 (Image Processing Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function PushQuantumPixel. The manipulation as part of a TIFF File leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Heap-based buffer overflow in the PushQuantumPixel function in ImageMagick before 6.9.7-3 and 7.x before 7.0.4-3 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted TIFF file.
The bug was discovered 12/26/2016. The weakness was presented 03/24/2017 (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at openwall.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-5508 since 01/16/2017. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 53 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 97252 (GLSA-201702-09 : ImageMagick: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175977 (Debian Security Update for imagemagick (DSA 3799-1)).
Upgrading to version 6.9.7-4 or 7.0.4-4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (97252) and SecurityFocus (BID 95748†). See VDB-97469, VDB-98501, VDB-98502 and VDB-98503 for similar entries. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
