Details
A vulnerability was found in Apple macOS up to 10.12.3 (Operating System). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component tcpdump. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The ZeroMQ parser in tcpdump before 4.9.0 has an integer overflow in print-zeromq.c:zmtp1_print_frame().
The bug was discovered 01/27/2017. The weakness was disclosed 03/27/2017 as HT207615 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.apple.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-7938 since 09/09/2016. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The advisory points out:
Multiple issues existed in tcpdump before 4.9.0. These were addressed by updating tcpdump to version 4.9.0.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 96884 (Debian DLA-809-1 : tcpdump security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175951 (Debian Security Update for tcpdump (DSA 3775-1)).
Upgrading to version 10.12.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (96884) and SecurityFocus (BID 95852†). The entries VDB-96107, VDB-96108, VDB-96109 and VDB-96110 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
