A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Apple watchOS up to 3.1 (Smartwatch Operating System). This issue affects an unknown code block of the component Kernel. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The bug was discovered 03/27/2017. The weakness was released 03/27/2017 by John Villamil with Google Project Zero as HT207602 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-2456 since 12/01/2016. Attacking locally is a requirement. Upgrading to version 3.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
