Apple watchOS up to 3.1 Kernel race condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability identified as critical has been detected in Apple watchOS up to 3.1. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality of the component Kernel. Performing a manipulation results in race condition. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2017-2478. Attacking locally is a requirement. Furthermore, an exploit is available. You should upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Apple watchOS up to 3.1 (Smartwatch Operating System). It has been classified as critical. This affects some unknown functionality of the component Kernel. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

The bug was discovered 03/27/2017. The weakness was published 03/27/2017 by Ian Beer with Google Project Zero as HT207602 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2017-2478 since 12/01/2016. Attacking locally is a requirement. A authentication is required for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The advisory points out:

A race condition was addressed through improved locking.

The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 99264 (Apple TV < 10.2 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc. and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370348 (Apple Mac OS X Security Update Sierra 10.12.4, El Capitan 2017-001 and Yosemite 2017-001 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2017-03-27-3)).
