A vulnerability has been found in ownCloud Server up to 9.0.5/9.1.1 (Cloud Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the component CardDAV Image Export. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability (Stored). Nextcloud Server before 10.0.1 & ownCloud Server before 9.0.6 and 9.1.2 suffer from Stored XSS in CardDAV image export. The CardDAV image export functionality as implemented in Nextcloud/ownCloud allows the download of images stored within a vCard. Due to not performing any kind of verification on the image content this is prone to a stored Cross-Site Scripting attack.
The bug was discovered 10/10/2016. The weakness was disclosed 03/28/2017 (GitHub Repository). The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-9465 since 11/19/2016. The attack can be launched remotely. A single authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 168 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
Upgrading to version 9.0.6 or 9.1.2 eliminates this vulnerability.
